OOC EVENT PLOTTING: The Nights Were Humid, Still. (September 2023)

OOC EVENT PLOTTING: SEPTEMBER 2023

This is the OOC plotting post for the September 2023 event! Here you can find brief summaries of the various event prompts which may help you engage in plotting with other players. To participate, utilize the code at the bottom of the page. This is not mandatory! Feel free to plot here or in private with other players, or simply wait to be part of the event.

NOTE: This is NOT the event log! The event log will go up on the 19th of this month.

WE WERE DREAMING, WAITING FOR NIGHT.

The new park is a permanent location that is open to residents 24/7 as there are no fences nor gates. It's larger than the one near City Hall and has more potential for exploring as well as different features from its cousin. For those that are familiar, it will evoke thoughts of New York's Central Park with its mixture of open areas contrasting with thick woods. Paved walkways, freshwater ponds, picnic areas, and a couple of playgrounds can all be found throughout the park. Along with these, residents may stumble upon other natural and man-made areas such as rocky outcrops, unmarked trails, bicycle paths, fountains, and other things typically found in large urban parks—minus the wildlife. It can be a romantic setting as easily as it can be a horrific one depending on the time of day as well as the company that you keep.

THEN THE HEAT BROKE, THE NIGHT WAS CLEAR.

Located in the southern half of the large park is a small fun fair that will open to the public the evening of September 19 with operating hours from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM City time. Before opening, none of the rides or games will be operational; however, there will be fliers advertising its opening all around the city on billboards and telephone poles, and adventurous characters are able to hop the fence and explore if they so desire. However, they will not be able to turn on any of the rides or games, and will not be able to break into the rides or booths under any circumstances.

Upon opening, there will be a number of rides running themselves on a schedule that allows people time to get on, have some fun, and then get back off again. Among those named are a merry-go-round, mirror fun house, bumper cars, a tunnel of love, and knock-off Gravitron. Though there's something unsettling about the music they play, or maybe how shaky they feel, there's no apparent danger anywhere. Residents are encouraged to enjoy themselves with a group of friends, or maybe a date, and experience all that the fun fair has to offer! The fair will not be open forever, though; its gates will close permanently at 11:00 PM on September 30 and all traces will disappear that night to leave a large, open field behind in the park.

This is a good, ol' fashioned carnival designed to bring together groups of people for thrills and fun. Though there are no overt game mechanics at play, we encourage everyone to get creative and add their own flair to this month's event. IT SEEMED AN HONOR TO HAVE A MOUTH.

As quintessential as the rides, no fun fair is complete without rigged games or greasy food. Some of the notable mentions are a shooting gallery, dart throwing, and the ubiquitous ring toss. You may think that it's easier to cheat at a game when there are no attendants telling you made-up rules, but you'll still find it difficult to win yourself one of the many prizes hanging from the ceilings. There's a plethora of food to enjoy with all the classics: corn dogs, fries, funnel cake, pizza, shaved ice, and fried junk food.

Despite the potential for danger from the shooting gallery and balloon dart games, both are designed to be as harmless as possible—the bullets are rubber, and the darts are made of plastic. While they will still leave a bruise, there shouldn't be risk of blood loss. The shooting gallery guns are chained in place, unable to be stolen. Removing the darts from their stall will result in thiefs walking in a tight circle that always brings them back in hopes the darts will be restored to their rightful place.

Though the food and games are free, the prizes are not—anyone who attempts to steal prizes without winning the games first will find themselves misplacing their items before leaving the carnival. If residents become aware of this phenomenon and try extra hard to focus on not losing their stolen prize, it will nevertheless slip from their hands and be lost—though a keen eye might see it back in its rightful place at the game stall. If you have the right temperament, this could become a game in and of itself!

Additionally, if there are any fair games or foods that have not been explicitly mentioned above, players are welcome to assume they can be found. Nothing as extravagant as a theme park or amusement park will be present as all of the stalls are designed to be mobile—this is a traveling carnival, after all. Similarly, players are welcome to design their own brand of unsettling game prizes as long as none of them can be used as an actual weapon or to otherwise harm fellow fair-goers.

ABOUT YOU: I'm EST and work a 9-5 job that doesn't allow for tagging during work hours, so most of my availability is nights and weekends! Texting spam is usually my go-to (please destroy my characters' IC inboxes with shitposting I beg you) but I also really enjoy digging in on big meaty log tags if the premise of the thread is compelling. I also enjoy a little mood whiplash — silly threads that turn thought-provoking or conversely, serious threads that somehow become ridiculous.

THANCRED WATERS

ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:

Thancred in a nutshell is essentially "presents outwardly as a flirtatious rogue type with a quick wit and flair for sarcasm, inwardly is an extremely capable and driven man who perpetually carries the weight of all the times he believes he's failed the people he loves." He's a survival and intelligence-gathering expert, skilled in fighting with both a gunblade and with knives, and can briefly turn invisible but WHOOPSIE doing it will kill him.

Essentially, he's a Bruce Wayne/Batman type — gregarious public face, extremely driven in his work life, broods when he's stressed or having a bout of low self-esteem, and has a really bad habit of accumulating surrogate children.

EVENT PLOTTING:

★ GAMES — 100% my man Thancred is going to be out here winning some shitty carnival prizes. He doesn't actually want the prizes in and of themselves — he's more just about the winning the games — so he'll be looking to give them away to people who look like they might want one! He's a softie at heart so his priorities will probably be like, kids first and then pretty girls after that, though he's not averse to handing one over ironically for other reasons. (Ryne and Y'shtola get whatever they want, at all times, forever.)

★ RIDES — I want to strand Thancred on a ride with someone (possibly multiple someones) and force them to have an extremely awkward time-filling conversation while they wait for the ride to get fixed again. Bonus points if this is a ride not easily escaped from like a Ferris Wheel or the Tunnel of Love.

★ SHENANIGANS — I genuinely love open-ended events like this because they're great for characters meeting each other in weird ways. Want to encounter Thancred by spilling a noxious red-and-blue shaved ice all over his pretty white coat? The possibilities for meetcutes are endless.

OTHER PLANS:

★ CR BUILDING — Mostly just a general desire, I've been slowly building out his CR network and would love to keep developing that! He's been spending a lot of time at the newly-opened university campus because there are sportsballs to play and keeping active is the second best thing to being able to train with his weapons, but I'm always open to ideas for getting him out and involved!

CANON: Original!
CANON POINT: Around ten years after her involuntary exile into the fantasy universe Ennalore.

ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:

The fast and dirty shorthand is: Essentially, she's a little bit Chosen One, a little bit isekai protagonist, and a little bit Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, all in one sassy redheaded package.

Ghost is a technical orphan who was "recruited" by an extradimensional organization called The Agency in her very early childhood because she possesses a unique talent — essentially, the ability to warp reality by writing about it in a book. Having personnel on staff who possess this talent is foundational to the functioning of The Agency, and predictably, it's also incredibly rare, hence their, uh...investment in picking her up. Ghost has no memories of life before The Agency and was essentially raised there happily, assuming she'd live out her life learning the art of writing and eventually taking over for her mentor Nym, with her fellow trainee and close friend Meta at her side.

BUT EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN ~~THE FIRE NATION~~ A REALLY DUMB CONSTRUCT THAT META WROTE INTO BEING ATTACKED

In order to escape certain death at the hands of the rampaging creation that Meta had written into being — without including adequate controls such that he could, y'know, control it — Ghost ended up yeeting herself into another universe (long story, pun intended) which turned out to be the fantasy realm of Ennalore. And because she was seventeen with no life skills except being an extremely genre-savvy author in training, she immediately began Connecticut Yankee-ing her way through the fantasy bullshit, breaking curses and solving problems until now, ten years later, she's established herself as the resident authority and subject matter expert of Fantasy Legal Bullshit™. Because I've always thought the idea of a fantasy lawyer is incredibly funny.

Also, everything about her original canon is puns. Her name is a pun. Her friends' names are puns. If there's an opportunity for a pun, you better believe I'm going to take it. I regret nothing.

EVENT PLOTTING:

★ PRIZES — Ghost is going to be more than a little obsessed with getting one (or many) of the carnival prizes because they'll remind her of the sorts of toys she had as a child — long story — but she's not any more or less skilled at these types of games than the average everyday carnivalgoer soooo...want to instantly get on her good side? Win her some dumb carnival shit. The more kitschy the better.

★ RIDES — This will actually be the first time she's ever physically been to this type of carnival (despite being aware of them in theory) which means she's going to spend an absolutely ridiculous amount of time on the rides, mostly the merry-go-round. She will probably not ride the extremely rickety Gravitron unless someone cute holds her hand or she's dared to, and even if she does she'll probably ramble the entire time about how it's a liability deathtrap waiting to happen.

★ D...ATES...? — If for some reason you want access to the dank lore that Ghost has a soft spot for True Love™ in the fairytale sense, drag her onto the Tunnel of Love with you and you might get to hear some of her thoughts about it.

★ SHENANIGANS — Like with Thancred, I'm really here for CR-building in general! Carnivals are fun venues for silly threads so let's come up with something!

OTHER PLANS:

★ GETTING ESTABLISHED — Ghost is still new so I'd love to shop for CR for her in general! Her major interests are detailed above but like, in a nutshell, if you're supernatural or like books and/or folklore you've probably got some stuff in common with her.

★ BOOKS — She's going to begin writing stories again in short order! People who are looking for books and/or legal documentation, she's open for business.

Ghost is going to be falling off the Ferris wheel to begin with so she'll be sticking to "safer" rides to begin with thereafter, but she can definitely be caught around the fair if Kai would be near those ones! Or close by the food, food is definitely always a good bet.

thancred - kaveh and thancred getting stuck on a ride at a great height, possibly a rollercoaster of some kind, and half the thread is just kaveh being kaveh dangling upside-down from the car going 'hold my legs, won't you' while he tries to get them unstuck and they argue about getting unstuck and possibly kaveh nearly dies from the attempt. bonus points if they discuss philosophy and/or yshtola because kaveh likes her a lot.

ghost - i've a literal dragon over with dan heng (

xiyu) and i'd be super interested in playing around with ghost's diplomatic immunity, and for her to sense that he is the in-universe avatar of a dragon deity and possibly a parallel to the azure dragon in chinese mythology. he was also archivist on a train that flew through space, and spent most of his existence reading in lieu of doing anything else, so he'd sympathise with the lack of books and possibly will recite a half dozen for her if it means that he gets to figure out why she pings him on a molecular level.

lastly, the real excuse for this plotting, my fav thancred meme:

is it bad that thancred holding a lighter person's legs off the side of a Thing so that they can attempt to perform upside-down maintenance is probably something he does with ryne all the time. he's strong and his daughter is a ninja. why wouldn't he do things like this. peak dad maneuver.

alternative and likewise hilarious option: kaveh's on the roller coaster alone, decides to get out to try to fix it, thancred climbs the roller coaster to stop him and then gets stuck with him. i present this likewise for your review.

re: ghost she is significantly interested in dragons specifically! one of her adventures involved her accidentally adopting a baby dragon after efforts to rehome it before it hatched kind of...failed...because it hatched prematurely and imprinted on her and she was just like welp. so i'm happy to hash out how that all might vibe with xiyu!
